Hi Bob ,

Thanks! but depth sounding is to find the bottom.

I understand the listening "directional hydrophone" topside forward to track surface ships.

The scrambled ping is interesting; were the special charts like a loaran "C" of the bottom? A recording of the spattered signal at a known spot?? Plotted so one could ID ones location? Do you or anyone have more re. this.

What about the higher teck boats like the type IX : XXI etc -- did they address the problem or was it the navigator's problem to run a dead reckonning of his travels underwater?? Dead slow underwater seems to be the cautious way to travel if you are guessing the bottom.

Knowing your depth is required for the torpedoman's job but what did the early nuc subs do to keep their position known? forward sonar?? And ice or slush in the polar region a hole new ball game!!

Lots of issues that could be explored here !

Thanks Bob maybe some uboat experts might join in here would make for some good discussions. :)

Sincerely,

Charla Anaya
