Hi Bob,
As James explained it I had thought it was hydraulic regulating valve that would maintain constant flow to a motor and keep a constant frequency of 50 Hz for the radio and electronic equipment onboard.
His excellent pictures showed a triode or pentode amplifier for the sounding gear or radio equipment actually a 12P35.
