Since this deals with radios and such, most likely the current wasn't converted to AC at all. You just use a vibrator to make and break the DC circuit 50~60 times a second, and a pulsating DC current has the same effect as AC so far as transformers are concerned. It's the build up and collapse of the magnetic field in the transformer that makes it work, and a vibrator circuit--the standard way of getting a radio to work in a car before transistors--will accomplish that. It also avoids having to turn AC back into DC, since everything but the transformers works on DC anyway.
