I thought about that to, the DC-DC converters are pretty effective nowadays. But I wonder if they where that good 60 years ago. You will create quite a lot of electronic noise if you’re not careful with the shape of the current you feed the transformers with.

So I can very well imagine that it was a better solution to have a more complicated DC-AC converter in the electro room then having each device being forced to generate their own AC.

But now I’m uncertain again since I don’t know if Charlas answer was based on fact or reasoning.
