Hi all,

The British modified several 'S' type boats when they allies first became aware of the type XXI. These subs were to act as high speed underwater targets for allied forces to train them to take on the type XXI's that were expected. The RN was not too imperssed with the performance of these subs (just streamlined and no extra batteries or more powerfull electric motors) and is one of the reasons why post-war the RN concentrated on 'Walter' boats (at least until the RN got its hands on Nuclear power).

As per Rossller the Norweigen Navy had an ex-kreigsmarine type VII and investrigated the possibility of streamlining the deck and tower post-war to increase underwater speed. When they investigated this they discovered that they only got a marginal increase in speed. Rosseller alos points out that any programe to modify the existing U-Boats would have compeated with and delayed the type XXI programme.
