Iain:

There is a slot on the top of the interior of the tube, centerline, which runs the full length of the torpeo tube. A guide stud on the top of the air flask (g7a) and on top of the battery compartment of
the g7e which runs in this slot. Also, there is a "shoe" located atop
the vertical tail section that rides in this slot. This prevents the
torpedo from turning inside the tube. The guide stud also comes up against a stop bolt on the top of the tube, which is lowered when the torpedo is loaded. A small handwheel on the outside center of the breech door is turned clockwise, placing a "buffer" against the tail of the torpedo. These items position the torpedo in order that the mechanical "spindles" for gyro, depth and speed settings enter the torpedo properly. Upon firing, these spindles and the top bolt are retracted pneumatically.

The firing solution results (gyro angle) are electrically transmitted from the TBT on the bridge or the Torpedo Data Computer in the ConningTower to the mechanical gyro setter at the torpedo tubes.

Hope this helps,

ROBERT M.
