For the most part, the forward motion of the torpedo as it was expelled from the tube operated the starter switch. For an electric torpedo this was a simple electrical switch. For wet heater torpedoes, the process was a little more complicated, involving opening air and fuel valves, firing a starter charge, and so on, but ultimately it was still a mechanical switch being tripped after the torpedo started out of the tube.
