Thanks for setting me straight Re: 'one million more tons.'
As for Germany's U-Boat campaign, well, yes, it did account for the vast majority of Allied (merchant and warships sunk, and no, the same is certainly not true of USN submarines in the Pacific. But U-Boats comprised a far larger portion of the Kriegsmarine; I think it is fair to say that after mid '42 at the latest, the U-Bootwaffe effectively WAS the German Navy. E.g. the Bismarck had been sunk, the infamous Channel Dash, while successful, ultimately led to the Prinz Eugen, Gneisenau, and Scharnhorst being effectively blocked from ever re-entering the Atlantic by the Royal Navy. While thereafter there were some not insignificant surface actions, the German surface fleet certainly received the worst end of it.
