Perhaps because the warships of most nations were being built larger and faster, and
a larger torpedo, carrying a larger warhead with more speed and range was necessary.
In the case of the Mark 14 Mod 3A submarine torpedo, its range was 4,500 yards @
46.3 knots, carrying a 660# Torpex warhead.
