<HTML>My uncle and namesake, William Brown, from Hamilton went down on HMS Tweed. Official report (BR 1886 (2)) states that nature of attack was 'Probably a non-contact torpedo fired from submarine' and brief account as follows:

'Tweed was operating in the North Atlantic at 13 knots, when a torpedo exploded in the vicinity of the after magazine. The ship broke her back just abaft the engine room and the after bulkhead of this compartment was thought to have collapsed. About 30 seconds after the torpedo hit at least one of a pattern of 10 depth charges exploded underwater and probably caused further damage. The ship took a heavy list to starboard, the bows came vertically out of the water and the stern was submerged from abaft the funnel. Tweed sank in approximately 2 minutes'

HMS Tweed was allocated to teh Royal Canadian Navy and was part of convoy ON218 en route to North America at the time of sinking.

On a more personal level, there was a song (I think originally for HMS Hood) regarding the sinking, words are:

When the HMS Tweed went down in the deep
That was the news that made mothers weep
The sons who had fought for their country so brave
Lie there below in their desolate graves
Sleeping in heavenly peace.
