I did not see Das Boot, I generally refrain from watching movies that are purported to portray wartime events due to the penchant of every director for taking liberties which have nothing to do with actual occurrences. I was a sub officer and as such I loath Hollywood's productions depicting life on board.
As for the OOGAH, I don't know why it was selected, but I visited diesel boats from at least 5 Navies and all had the same type of klaxon, at least up to 1978
