submarines on picket

Allied subs (mostly British, I believe) were stationed outside a number of German and German controlled ports as a matter of routine until sometime in mid 1942 when these patrols were stopped in order to free up the subs for use in the Med.
Does anyone know...
1 what subs were used in these picket operations along the German/French coast?
2 what successes they had?
3 whether all the patrols were stopped or if some ports were still picketed?
