Brest was a favourite. So was Trondheim. The objective was to pounce on German capital ships. In Sept 1940 the 2nd Submarine Flotilla was formed at Holy Loch. It comprised largely of 'T' and 'S' class boats. These boats spent much of their time hunting for Tirpitz and Scharnhorst, as well as policing axis blockade runners. One particular fruitless blockade became known as the 'ring of iron'.
Sceptics called it the 'ring of rust' There were many fleeting sightings but few real opportunities to attack. Three boats heavily involved (among many others) were Sealion, Seawolf and the French Minerve.
These operations are described in great detail in the Hezlet history of submarine ops 1939-45 and the Staff History (Home Waters)
