Q Ship Stonecrop v U boat ? 17th Set 1917

One of my relatives served aboard the Q ship HMS Stonecrop (aka Glenfoyle/Dunlevon/Winona) during 1917. The commander Maurice Blackwood received a DSO and my relative a DSC for an action the ship was involved in on 17th September 1917. On the records this is simply referred to as 'engagement with enemy submarine.'

Some sources I have found say that this was the sinking of U88 under the command of Walter Schweiger. The majority however (including the German account)claim that the U88 was sunk by a mine earlier in the month in the North Sea. If it wasn't U88 that the Stonecrop attacked in the Atlantic off Ireland, does anyone have any idea as to which U boat it may have been?

The ship itself was sunk by 2 torpedoes the following day by U43 commanded by Waldemar Bender, my relative being amongst those killed. This was apparently without warning which would suggest that it had been identified as a Q ship - had it attacked U43 the day before but not sunk it?

Any information gratefully received
