maccad,

The U-cruiser U 151 was the U-boat in the September 17 action. Acccording to the German official history, she took three hits in her engagement with Stonecrop/Winona but obviously survived and continued her patrol.

I have U 43's KTB describing the sinking of Stonecrop. Bender dived to conduct an underwater attack on a steamer -- quite common with unrestricted submarine warfare. He overestimated the size of his target though and thought it a tanker and thus fired two torpedoes instead of the usual one. It's only after the ship sank that he realized it was a Q-ship. The massive crew compared to the size of the vessel gave it away.

U 43 had also received a warning that night by radio from a U-cruiser that the tanker Winona was actually a Q-ship. The message also gave a location for Winona on September 17.

Best wishes,
Michael
