<HTML>Brian,
This is a classic example as to why you should never trust any pre-1966 source (or Kemp, but that's a different story) about 1918 German U-boat losses. The UB 66/Campanula story comes from the British. Obviously, the Campanula attacked an U-boat and thought it inflicted damage or sunk it. The Royal Navy also learned that UB 66 went missing in the Mediterranean at about the same time. They assume these two events were related when, in fact, they were not.
Only with the publication in 1966 of the final volume of Spindler, did it become obvious that the standard tale was incorrect. UB 66 was to end its patrol in Constantinople. She refueled in Beirut on the 12th and was off Egypt on the 17th. She literally could not have gotten to the Cap Bon area the next day if she had wanted to.
Best wishes,
Michael</HTML>
