The first question, exploding boiler? the fact that the majority of the boiler room crew survived & gave their accounts makes that theory unlikely, where as the fact the torpedo struck the starboard side directly into one of the large empty coal bunkers that ran along both SIDES of the ship and as stated would at this time be full of combustible coal dust (The German cruiser Karlsruhe i believe was lost to the same cause)seems the most probable cause.
The second question, German U-boat commander's seemed to count all ships excluding hospital & properly identifed neutrals (in most cases)as fair game in alloted war zones (before being given a free hand later in the war), the bigger the better for their tonnage scores, i believe lemp in U-30 WW11 did the same thing.</HTML>
