<HTML>Alison,

I handle the WWI fate information for this website. I also work with divers to locate and identify U-boat wreck.

The wreck I think you are thinking about is a few miles off Dunbar at 56° 03'.72N, 02° 29'.63W. That wreck is clearly an UEI (not an UCII) minelayer. The wreck in question is believed to be U 77. The other possibility would be U 74.

One thing to be very careful about is mixing up submarines of the U, UB, and UC types -- there was a U 75, UB 75, and UC 75 (for example) and all three were war losses. It is obvious you are confusing them. The boat though (incorrectly) to be off Flamborough Head is the UB 75 -- she was found earlier this year a bit further up the coast.

The boats sometimes listed in some older accounts as being lost in the Straits of Dover are the UC 77 and UC 78. (The latest research and dive discoceries discount those explanations.)

Best wishes,

Michael</HTML>
