My National Geographic Atlas shows the waters in that area to be 400 fathoms or more deep. So it seems that rather than admitting that a British merchant ship sank while trying to ram a German submarine -- which might scare merchant ship captains into not trying to ram in teh future -- the RN simply classified the Ryton's loss as non-war related (it's not in BVLAS or Lloyd's War Losses). Of course, it would be technically correct that Ryton sank after striking a submerged object...
