That's certainly a possibility and I just going to suggest the same thing with the same example.
Of course, it's also possible that U 139 simply stopped España without really damaging her and the small sailing vessel subsequantly sank in a storm. Or put another way, Fechter may have presumed U 139 was ultimately responsible for the loss when maybe she wasn't.
