Fettling and mould marks testify to its being cast.
Accurate deciphering of the name has, to date, not been possible by naked eye, optical magnification by glass or field microscope, photographic magnification or image manipulation, brass-rubbing techniques or water immersion.
The first name looks eastern european or even Turkish to me. Someone of the same nationality might recognize it immediately and I've even thought of taking it to the local Polish Church to ask members of the congregation what they made of it.
I think I can make out: K*rolid* M**ly. What is certain is that at magnifications greater than those provided the name appears progressively more indistinct. How do you see it?
U-boat commanders could be discounted. For one thing, none of their names remotely resembles the name on the plinth. Likewise an associaton with Cathcart Quay, Birkenhead is most unlikely. The grandson would have known about it. At a guess I would go for a statesman. I wonder how many busts were cast. This can hardly be a singleton and perhaps anique dealers' and auctioneers' catalogues may possbly yield better information.
