Optimistic question

I wonder if anyone might have any ideas as to how I could find out more about the following:- Apparently a late uncle, I've just learned, was a seaman on a merchant ship ( British?) torpedoed in mid Atlantic during WW1 - no dates or other details are available. The U-boat skipper gave the survivors in the lifeboat supplies and a course to the nearest land - Ireland- which they reached after several days rowing.

This may be a unique tale, or maybe not so uncommon, with so little to go on, have I any hope of finding the actual event? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Angus.
