Hi, thanks very much for your reply. His name was Archie MacInnes (or McInnes - they weren't too fussy then) and as he came from Skye, it seems likely that he got a job with a Clyde-based company. On that slender basis, and taking only those sinkings that occurred , say over 40 miles from the Irish coast, I've looked through AJ Tennent's book, and narrowed the search down to a mere 30 or so possible vessels.
Would anyone know of any books that might have this sort of story? I was surprised to see how often prisoners were takrn -i.e. there was contact between the u-boat and the survivors.
Any possible avenues for exploring would be very welcome.
