<HTML>The following is a quote from something written by Jak Mallmann Showell in
The U-boat Archive, December 2000
\"There is another rather sad episode of modern officialdom to report. This time it concernes the 19th National U-boat Meeting being held in Berlin around the time of publication of this issue. The organiser, Horst Boettcher, asked permission to hold an interdenominational service by the grave of Lothar von Arnauld de la Periere, who is buried in a small cemetery in the city. In case the name is not familiea, von Arnauld de la Periere was the most successful submarine commander of tll times, having commanded the Imperial German Submarines U35 and U139 during the First World War. Although the tradition of an interdenominational service sounds rather simple and would not even raise eyebrows in Britain nor in the United States, the German authorities made things so difficult that a correspondence war was waged long enough for a 1cm thick folder to be accumulated. The saga ended with the Berlin authorities refusing permission. Going into their reasoning seems pointless because none of their rationalisation even makes sense. So, it is difficult to add any comments, but it seems so sad that the powerful Federal Republic of Germany is afraid of a group of old men standing around an even older grave, remembering those who cannot be present because they gave their lives for that country\"
RB, Torlief, KPP - your were all right in comments you made in previous postings about the German authorities and their attitude to the past.
Does it really do any harm to remember those who gave their lives for their country?
Whether their leaders were right or wrong brave men fought and died.........
