I agree that "Memoirs" by Donitz is a good starting point.
However, the contents in this book is 'new' forward by John Toland
and the Introduction is by Jurgen Rohwer. ISBN O-306-80764-5
The book by Donitz is also translated in the English version and
you still get buy it on the Internet. BUT the book written by Donitz is
a clear way Donitz discussed his planning of the U-boat arm
campaign before the war and after the war ended in Germany.
