<HTML>Thanks to all (including Oliver and Yuri!) for the responses.
I am not very up to speed on WWII spy history or the Russian front, and I thank you all for your info.
Apparently Lucy, aka The Red Orchestra is for real, though from some of the responses I get the feeling that it was more complicated than a single spy ring.
I searched on the internet and found a few references to books on the Red Orchestra, but don't know how good they are.
Can anyone recommend a good book (in English) on the Red Orchestra?
As for the side issue raised by Valeria, that is a new thread!
The sub in question is the USS Becuna, a Balao class boat built in 1944, but reworked into a more streamlined Guppy after the war. It does resemble some post-war Soviet models, because they had a similar mission and technology level. It was not a copy - there are a number of good texts that will verify the development trail of the Becuna, if you are interested.
But I do agree with Mr. Valeria, the Soviets were absolute tops in humint intelligence, and ran the best spy organization during WWII, and the sacrifice and fortitude of the Russian people was vital to allied success.
Kris: What's this about an enigma being handed off to the Russians? (Sounds like one of my theories). Who, when, how? Did anyone supply them with monthly coding tables? Sources, references?
Thanks!!</HTML>
