<HTML>Hi Cal -
As I understand it, a skeleton crew was usually kept on, to deal with maintenance, loading supplies, etc, (and in the interests of security, to guard against sabotage etc), while the rest could go home to parents or wives (if within reach), or to an official `rest and recreation centre`, or even (if the crew was so invited) to their affiliated town/city who entertained them all `en bloc` periodically. The Kommandant would have a de-briefing session with Dönitz (or other senior officers ?) before taking time out.
Anyone know anything about the `R and R` centres ? Were they specifically u-boat, or shared with the KM ? And where were they ?
Hope this helps - a bit, anyway !
Best regards
