In 1941 British intelligence broken Japanese cipher and read telegrams which Tokyo was exchanged with its embassy in Berlin. The Swedish professor of mathematics Arne Beurling managed to uncover a secret German code ciphermachine. He not only has solved the very complex device of this machine, but also has helped to construct decipher device, which converted a set of digits into the standard text. From this moment the Swedes could read all German messages.
Because of the simple operation of Soviet intelligence the deciphered German reports immediately arrived to Moscow. The presence of the photocopies of the deciphered telegrams and the wireless interception of the German lines of communications helped Soviet experts independently reveal German cipher.
It is known that the British intelligence in the prewar time unsuccessfully attempted to break the Soviet code. These works were ended after the attack of Germany in the USSR for the order of Churchill. However, in 1943-1944 works on the dissection of the Soviet code they were carried out again. Results are not known for me.
Soviet intelligence acquired British diplomatic cipher in 1935 in Netherlads, in 1938 in Austria, in 1940 in Switzerland. This allowed to have an access to the secret correspondence of Foreign Office and British intelligence. Therefore Soviet external intelligence could in proper time inform Soviet government about the preparation of the "Munich agreement" of England and France with Germany and Italy after the back of the USSR.
At the end end WW2 American was lucky with the Soviet cipher. In their hands has got the burnt code book of the Soviet Ambassy in Finland. This strictly classified project which received the code name "Venona" allowed the American special services through several years (to 1948) partially decipher separate reports of the Soviet intelligence in New York .
For Soviet intelligence during WW2 basic problem consisted in the fact that in the USSR there were no experts of the Indians of the USA. This about described me 20 years back a guy, who was sun of Soviet naval attache in the USA. Now this man is one of the largest connoisseurs of languages and culture of American Indians in Russia. In 1995 his story obtained confirmation after the declassification of the American archives of times WW2.
It was established after the end of war that the Germans read cipher messages of the USA and England, and they also knew the ciphers of Spain, France (vichy), Ireland, Egypt, Iran, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal and emigrant Polish government in London. From the conversation of Churchill overheard by them with Roosevelt the Germans became known about the prepared capitulation of Italy. This allowed Germany in proper time pull troops for occupying the larger part of Italy.
