<HTML>Thanks for the responses.

Superkraut:
But surely the Red Orchestra was a factor in giving credibility to the wrong answer, and detracting from the possibility to an analytic enigma penetration.

Oliver:
I agree that Himmler and the SS were in the drivers seat with regards to counterintelligence and spy hunting. But a larger technical staff for the Bdu would help independently assess the true invulnerability of the enigma machine. The bureaus who developed it and were responsible for it were overly enamored with it and could not see 'out of the box' thinking on how to crack it. Nor did they realize how many cribs they were dribbling into the airwaves.

Yuri:
I believe it was not the British but the Americans that were broke and read the Japanese diplomatic 'Purple' code; reading the messages between the ambassador in Berlin and Tokyo was but one benefit.

The breaking of the Japanese codes is its own story, and mostly an American one. It had its ups and downs, as there were a number of diplomatic, naval, and merchant convoy codes of varying levels of sophistication.

It is interesting, in light of this thread, that the Japanese realized, mid-war, that their messages were being decrypted, and changed their codes. They never seriously considered a 'spy in their midst'. The idea that one of their own was betraying them from the inside never occured to them.

Did any of the allies have any spies inside Japan, spying on the Japanese? (The Sorge ring was spying among the foreign community and embassies, no?)</HTML>
