Hello Chris

From Chapter VIII of book: Andry and Gordievsky, KGB. Foreign-policy operations from the Lenin up to Gorbachev.

(I have not original of this book published in English. For this reason I have made return translation from Russian edition)

One of reasons of change-overs in the Soviet military intelligence in the spring of 1943 was improvement of intercept. From the very beginning of war a research department of the Fifth handle ИНУ and, undoubtedly, криптологи a GRU were beaten above decryption of the engine ciphers "Enigma". It was the extremely difficult task. German army, aircraft, fleet, other organizations - all used "Enigma" for creation of the own ciphers and applied various keys to the various purposes, in miscellaneous places. Since 1941 simultaneously in work was not less than 50 keys, and all of them daily varied. Even having decrypted the engine cipher, it was necessary fast to find a key, if the intercepted material had operating value. In Blechli, continuing earlier work of the Polish experts, have managed to decrypt all main varieties of the ciphers "Enigma" with 1940 for 1942 and to develop methods of definition of daily keys. It, perhaps, was by one of the largest reachings of intelligence for years of war. NKVD has learned about this success from Кэрнкросса and less in detail - from Longum, Blant and Filbi. The NKVD has helped also that they managed to capture some encryption machines "Enigma" and encryption materials. It has taken place, apparently, in December, 1941, when the Second German army has lost some machines was most of all captured, certainly, under Stalingrad.

In the German troops, surrounded under Stalingrad, there were as a minimum twenty six encryption machines "Enigma", and in conditions of environment many from them to delete it was impossible.

One case is known at least, when from an army headquarters the codifyings were transferred, though Russian were literally on a threshold. Remaining "Enigma" could be captured during destruction of six German divisions, прорывавшихся to surrounded. Almost for certain in hand of Red Army some main keys have got also. Quite probably as well it is not less important, that among 91. 000 POW, captured under Stalingrad, there were signalmen and шифровальщики, and not all of them could counter to persevering sentences to help the Soviet intelligence.

January 17, 1943, still up to Stalingrad, the department of communication of Wermahte has come to conclusion, that some cases "undoubtedly" bear to a solution by Russian of the ciphers "Enigma".
