<HTML>The red light was used to preserve the crew's night vision when viewing through the periscope and when moving from the boat's interior to the bridge while surfaced. Also, when the boat is on the surface, any light that may inadvertantly filter to the outside will less likely be detected by an enemy ship or aircraft. White light is easily seen from a distance, while red is much more difficult to see. This is the same reason why infantry flashlights have a red lens.</HTML>
