<HTML>In my experience mostly suface but some sub surface night vision at night is highly prized. the better your night vision the happier you are. This is best achieved by as dark a bridge/control room as possible. Low red light was tolerated for short periods to plot positions etc but that was about all. Red wasnt a problem if as was pointed out the manufacturer of the chart didnt use red and corrections were not in red. NZ for many years used red compass roses which was particularly anoying but this seemed to be a localised problem. Certainly when on ops at night on the sub I was on red light was used very little when periscope was being used. In my surface days I witnessed several people being ejected from the bridge for using red torches when we had a submariner as Captain.
As ever though CO's have an influence. 747 captains dont even look where they are going!!</HTML>
