<HTML>What would be the reply if someone were to ask members of the German public during 1945 the question: Who is the famous Kriegsmarine U-boat commander? (alive or deceased)
Would it be Günther Prien because of U 47's mission to Scapa Flow, when HMS Royal Oak was sunk. Or was the tonnage king Otto Kretschmer more famous in Germany in 1945? Or was Joachim Schepke, Erich Topp, Otto Schuhart, Reinhard Suhren or Engelbert Endrass the most famous at that point?
In a second question, I'd like to ask which Kriegsmarine U-boat commander is the most famous around the world at the present moment. Is Günther Prien still the most famous of the aces, or has Kretschmer's fame overtaken that of Prien's?
I realise these questions are subjective, and the answers may vary due to peoples' opinion. Nevertheless, I would find it interesting to hear opinions on this matter.
