However, because of Michael Gannon's book, "Operation Drumbeat", I suspect Reinhard Hardegen would be perhaps not the "most famous" but the "best known" to the WWII American merchant marine and navy personnel. This book has been recommended as "must" reading for the midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy, ergo Hardegen must stand high in recognition there.
