<HTML>Prien was the first one I ever heard of (multiple times), back in the mid seventies.
The next one was "Der Alte", as I went to see Das Boot. By then my interest in U-boats was well-awake, but very little real-life information actually reached me (for lack of internet and access to decent libraries). I did for instance not know that the movie was based on real people and events. I read whatever I encountered about the topic, but somehow only the name of Prien really stuck for any period of time, probably because it was the very first one I learned about and the Scapa Attack was so daring.
If you ask me to name one commander now, Kretchmer is the first one that comes to my mind. But, of course, by now I know way too much about the topic to still be a relevent yard stick for personal fame of anyone.
I was born in 1965, by the way.</HTML>
