Submerged Time?

<HTML>What was the longest time a uboat without a schnorchel could stay submerged before the crew became unconscious? I heard that a US sub was down for almost 34 hours. Could they use the ballast tank air for breathing? If you release let\'s say 1 cubic meter of oxygenated air from the ballast supply and then pump back into the ballast supply 1 cubic meter of \"dirty air\" you could certainly prolong the time you are submerged. Also, did they have a way of metering the O2 content?</HTML>
