OK...still trying to help you out here.
1. U-553 (commander Karl Thurmann) attacked and sunk the SS Nicoya and the SS Leto on May 11/12, 1942. The SS Nicoya sank close to Grande-Vallee (closer to Fame Point) not too far off shore.
2. U-517 (commander Paul Hartwig) torpedoed 9 ships on his August-September, 1942 patrol in Canadian waters. The 2 ships to sink closest to Riviere au Renards were the SS Mount Pindus and the SS Mount Taygetus which were torpedoed shortly after 6:00 pm on September 7th. Both ships reportedly had tanks on deck bound for Britain. These 2 ships were torpedoed just east of Cape Gaspe. After so many sinkings, U-517 set out on its 2nd and last patrol in November of 1942 but was sunk on November 21st...1 to 3 (sources vary) crew died and most survived to become POWs.
The SS Mount Pindus and SS Mount Taygetus were very close to shore when torpedoed.
3. 3 other ships were torpedoed and sunk a little further east. They were the SS Oakton (Sept. 7/42 by U-517), the SS Inger Elisabeth (Sept. 15/42 by U-517) and the SS Saturnus (Sept. 15/42 by U-517). The sank just east of the SS Mount Pindus and the SS Mount Taygetus.
U-517 created tremendous havoc in Canadian waters during her patrol.
One more thing...U-518 landed a spy near New Carlisle, Quebec (north shore of Baie du Chaleur on September 9, 1942.
The intrigue continues!</HTML>
