Convoy SL 125 - what U boat?

<HTML>Hi,

Have recently read two excellent books. \'The Fourth Service\' by John Slader and \'Tramp Steamers at War\' by George Gunn. Both mention convoy SL 125 and an act of humanity shown by the commander of an unknown U-boat. Details as below:

SL 125 sailed from Freetown on 16th October 1942. Its escorts were one sloop, four corvettes and and armed trawler. However, when the convoy was attacked, only the four corvettes were on station. 37 merchant ships formed the convoy, 12 were sunk and, from the information I have, the following U boats took part.

U-509. U-604. U-659. U-203. U-510. U-409.

During the attack by the U-boats, the steamship Baron Elgin turned back to pick up survivors from those ships sunk. A surfaced U-boat witheld its fire as the Baron Elgin went about her task, the Baron Elgin\'s gunners also witholding fire on the U-boat. The U-boat circled the Baron Elgin but did not attack, diving later. The Baron Elgin was able to land the survivors at Funchal, Madeira.

The Baron Elgin did, I believe, survive the war.

Does anyone know what U-boat this was?
