Donitz may well have disapproved but the act is recorded in the books I mentioned plus in the post which also adds info to this topic!

It was not uncommon for U boat commanders to allow crews to escape before sinking their vessels. Again, there is evidence in many books of this - but I think this incident, where a U boat allowed the vessel to pick up and take survivors to port, is unique.

Many surface ship commanders - warship and armed cruisers - of the Kriegsmarine were honest men with humanity in their veins.
