For your concluding conjecture to work out, he would have to have been back on the boat, for one paramount reason: German Uboat skippers did not have the habit to arm themselves with a Luger etc. when it was time to abandon the boat and hope to be picked up by an enemy destroyer. Thus, if he was aboard, he could have scuttled her himself. Nobody claimed him being shot fending off boarders. That leaves him either being shot in the water or drowing. I opt for a likely combination of the last two.
