Well, according to the accounts of the history channel (and i hope those guys can be trusted with their historical accuracies) he was shot while escaping back to the boat to destroy the enigma and its codes. He also drowned after the shoot out and the boat captured intact. But u-boat.net says only that he was killed in action. It was by fluke that i got to see the that episode of the secrets of WWII where it mentioned of how the first enigma was captured and how Lemp died. Later the BdU added a fourth rotor and this set the allies back in their research of breaking codes back to square one. But a year later, as the episode goes, they captured a second u-boat with all hands and landed themselves to the prize of a four rotor enigma with all its code keys. I wonder why it never occured to the surrendering commanders first to destroy the enigma machine and its codes!!!
