In your story about the DOGGERBANK, you should mention her role as a prison ship. When she left the raider MICHEL on June 23, 1942, bound for Yokohama, there were on board survivors of four ships sunk by the MICHEL and two ships sunk by the raider STIER. The MICHEL\'s victims were PATELLA (British), CONNECTICUT (Panamanian registry, but manned by an American crew and a U. S. Navy gun crew), KATTEGAT (Norwegian), and LYLEPARK (British). From the STIER she received men from the GEMSTONE (British) and STANVAC CALCUTTA (Panamanian flag, manned by mostly Americans and a U. S. Navy gun crew.
I honestly don\'t know the exact number who were turned over to the Japanese, but it was approximately 204. The KATTEGAT crew, estimated at 35, were later put on several German blockade runners for return to Europe and, eventually, Norway. These ships were intercepted and sunk by Allied naval forces with substantial loss of lives, including many of the unfortunate Norwegians.
Cordially.
