On a visit to Hawkshead a few years ago, I searched the churchyard for the grave of a German seaman but was told by a local person whom I suppose knew what he was talking about, that there had indeed been a German seaman's grave there but that the body had been dis- interred and sent back to Germany, presumably for his family.
