All Berndt had to do was to make his way over 22 miles of open country, while being hunted. Then he would have needed to make his way through Barrow-in-Furness [my home town], identify the Naval Base [as distinct from the other docks]m scale a high brick wall, dodge past at least two Royal Navy sentries, go aboard U-570, open the sea cocks and let the submarine sink perhaps 40 feet.
A Royal Navy salvage team would have taken no more than a day or two to haul the submarine to the surface and pump it dry.
I am of the opinion that the officers in Grizedale Hall knowingly sent Berndt to his death.
To this day, 6GEB7Berndt rests in Hawkshead Cemetery, awaiting the Last Trump.
