Hi Again Rainer/All:
Look, I'm going to be a pest by monopolising this thread, but I see on the (very fine) uboat database on this site that the fate of U-240 was updated by Axel Niestlé during February 1998. The previously recorded fate was that it had been sunk by a 330 Squadron Sunderland - the update in Feb '98 stated that the Sunderland actually attacked U-668, which was undamaged.
However, a member over on one of the aircraft boards, where Chris originally posted, had the following information regarding the attack just past midnight on 16/17 May 1944 by the 333 Squadron Catalina:
"According to 'Flying Cats' by Andrew Hendrie published 1986 by Airlife ... the pilot of FP121 Sub-Lt Harald Hartmann met the captain of the U668 after the war when Wolfgang von Eickstedt was a priest in Hamburg and they became friends and thus the author had personal accounts from the two former antagonists a unique event in his study of such combats."
The account confirms U-668 was not sunk, but does say it was damaged.
Given that the two skippers compared notes on the incident, is it worth re-examining whether U-240 was in fact sunk by the Sunderland (currently listed in the database as lost to unknown causes)?
Either way, I'm no expert on U-Boats, however I thought the information might be of interest.
Cheers,
Mark
