Hi Mark
Thanks for the link to the ORBs of the Norwegian Squadrons!
Ok, lets get an overview from the events:
At 17.25 hours on 16 May 1944, Sunderland "V" of 330. Squadron attacked an U-boat in 63°05N/03°10E. Flak killed the front gunner and badly damaged the flying boat.
The next day, Catalina "C" of 333. Squadron searched the area where V/330 had attacked. At 00.07 hours on 18 May, the aircraft attacked an U-boat in 62°26N/01°45E and shortly thereafter spotted a second U-boat. The flying boat also lost a gunner and was badly damaged.
The attack of V/330 was thought to be responsible for the loss of U-240, but as written on our pages research of Axel Niestlé showed that U-668 was attacked but not damaged. I know that Axel is reading this forum now and then, so he will probably answer himself.
I think it is possible that the U-boats spotted by C/333 were U-240 and U-668, but we first need a copy of U-668's war diary to find out how many air attacks were experienced by this U-boat in May 1944.
Best regards
