<HTML>Hi All,
Another interesting aspect of this issue is the sexually oriented propaganda (usually in the form of a cartoon) used by all sides as a weapon during the war.
Germany used some that suggested to the Brits that while they were away fighting the American military was having their way with their wives, sweethearts, and daughters. I think there was a British saying to the effect that the only thing that was wrong with the Yanks was that they were over paid, over sexed, and over here.
Also there was a TV special on public TV a while back about the sexually oriented propaganda the Brits used against the Germans. It included describing or picturing perverted sexual acts among the German leadership, and suggestions that the SS were having their way with their wives, sweethearts, and daughters while they were away at the front. I don’t know if there was any directed to the crews of U-boats or the Kriegsmarine in general but there probably was. There was some directed at Hitler. I looked through the History Channel web site trying to find the tape of the episode but I didn’t find it. I think it was called something like “Sex and the Third Reichâ€, but I am not sure. Some of the British propaganda was put together by a sweet, little old lady that was interviewed on the show. She was younger at the time.
All sides depicted the enemy as sexual predators during the war, busily raping somebody. Also I have seen a number of cartoons that featured a woman wearing a military hat with an SS insignia on it (and not much else) and holding a whip, with a man cowering at her feet or sometimes smiling at her feet.
The Russian army was allowed to rape and pillage for a good while once they had taken Berlin as retribution for what was done in their country. A number of their victims were very young girls and children but even the elderly were not spared. I also know that the Japanese military thought nothing of forcing captive women into brothels.
As to homosexuality, it could be grounds in Germany to be sent to a concentration camp. Concentration camp inmates in at least some of the camps wore symbols on their clothing that indicated, in general, why they were in the camp. Criminal prisoners wore one set of emblems, political prisoners wore another and there were many other categories. I believe I read that the symbol for homosexuals was a pink triangle.
There were also brothels in some German concentration camps.
Anyone who saw Das Boot will remember the scene where someone had the crabs (which could be picked up in brothels). Crabs on a U-boat could cause a significant problem resulting in a loss of efficiency for the whole crew, not to mention a lot of bad tempers.
