Lord HawHaw\'s mentioning of base construction under submarine surveillance sounds doubtful to me. Might even be a deliberate attempt to mislead. FW200 more likely. Also location at end of a long fjord could be an easy Uboat trap.
Entire Davis Straight area north of Resolution is a VERY unlikely Uboat prowling area simply due to the expected lack of shipping activity there. The area south of Cape Farewell to the southeastern Labrador coast and Belle Isle Straight was of high interest to Uboat Command because of expected traffic during June through October. (I did a couple mid winter crossings on the northern great circle route, and fared a lot better weather wise than other ships on parallel course further south).
Summation: Am unaware of any wheather station attempt north of the one in Labrador. Scarcity of ship traffic, thus agree with you that the periscope sightings were either seals or narwals frolicking about. Rgds, RB</HTML>
