Ken,
I realise you're very knowledgeable on the subject of u-boats and I don't pretend to know more than you. But how can you say with certainty no u-boats ever entered an Irish port during WW2? I think such knowledge goes beyond researching books or even examining records. You'd imagine that, given the political situation, if any u-boats did ever enter Irish ports, it would not be promptly documented. For what purpose would it serve other than to shoot themselves in the foot if it ever came to light or could be proven?
Furthermore, I think the chances a u-boat did enter an Irish port and were aided by the IRA are pretty high considering they (the IRA) wouldn't think twice about detonating a bomb in a public street in England, so to give aid to a U-Boat seems to be an easy thing to do, given the chance. A U-Boat could've potentially harmed Britain far more significantly than a small bomb ever could.
So I would say: "it's unlikely but possible a U-Boat entered an Irish port in World War 2". Anyone who says they know for sure is just lying to themselves and to others. We simply DO NOT KNOW.
Cheers.
