Hello Jean Noel and Don Prince,
Gentlemen you are both right; indeed it was ordered by, I believe Dönitz himself, for the Navy to salute in the fashion of the H…gruß among each other. But if my recollection serves me right their was quite a resistance to observe this order within navy – circles, as Erich Topp told me a couple years ago.
Checking Dönitz’s Memoirs TEN YEARS AND TWENTY DAYS, edition 0f 1990, p. 401 ff you (of course) don’t find anything on this subject – matter. On the other hand if one listen to his radio broadcast to the navy on the eve of July 20th 1944, see above p. 403, having the Admiral giving such said order would not have contradicted the content of this speech, btw which attributed to quite an extent Dönitz being “condemned by many as a fanatical Nazi leader;†see above XIII Introduction to his book written by Jürgen Rohwer for the edition I have in 1990.
